What to expect

The TF-28 is southern Tenerife’s old main road — the Carretera General del Sur — and it is still one of the island’s great riders’ roads. From Chayofa it carves through the medianías past Valle de San Lorenzo and San Miguel de Abona to Granadilla, crossing deep volcanic ravines on historic bridges with the Atlantic always in view below.

Before the TF-1 motorway was built in the 1970s this was the artery of the whole south, and it shows: an almost endless chain of corners through authentic rural villages, far from the coastal resorts. The 2025 BMW F 900 GS is a weapon here — nimble, punchy out of the bends, and composed over the older, characterful tarmac.

You’ll meet some local traffic, delivery vans and the odd school bus inside the towns, but the stretches between villages are pure flow. Ride it early for cool, clear air or late for golden light on the southern slopes.

Fascinating facts

  • Before the TF-1 motorway was built in the 1970s, the TF-28 (Carretera General del Sur) was the main artery connecting Santa Cruz to the south of the island
  • The route winds through traditional agricultural regions famous for potato, stone fruit, and vineyard cultivation
  • As you ride, you cross numerous deep ravines that showcase millions of years of water erosion on Tenerife's volcanic shield
  • Granadilla de Abona, the final stop, is one of the oldest municipalities in the south, rich in history and traditional Canarian architecture
  • The elevation stays roughly between 400m and 600m above sea level, providing a cooler climate than the hot coastal beaches
