What to expect

From the historic midland town of Granadilla de Abona, the TF-21 zigzags hard up the side of the volcano to Vilaflor — the highest village in Spain at around 1,400 m. In a handful of kilometres you climb out of the dry southern terraces into the dense Canary pine of the Corona Forestal, with the temperature dropping the whole way up.

This is the legendary southern gateway to Teide National Park, packed with steep hairpins and grippy, technical asphalt. The 2025 BMW F 900 GS is a mountain goat on this climb — torquey out of the tightest bends and razor-sharp from lean to lean.

Expect cyclists and rental cars heading up toward Teide, so pick your overtakes on the short straights. In winter it can be cold at the top, so pack a layer; in summer it is the perfect escape from the coastal heat.
