Tenerife Weather for Motorcyclists

Located just off North-West Africa, Tenerife keeps its coasts between 20 and 30 degrees every month of the year — while the Teide road climbs to 2,356 metres of crisp alpine air. This is the rider’s guide to it: the best months, the north–south split, the calima, and what to pack. Rated 5/5 by 1,700+ riders.

One island, three riding climates

Tenerife’s weather only makes sense on a motorcycle once you know it is really three climates stacked on one island.

The south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas) is the arid side — over 300 sunny days a year, winter daytime highs around 22–24°C, summer around 28–31°C, and often months between rain showers. This is where our base is, and it is the most reliable starting point for a ride on any given day of the year.

The north (Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz, Anaga) is the green side. The northeast trade winds push moist air against the mountains, so the north runs 2–4°C cooler with more cloud, and the laurel forests of Anaga can sit in mist while the south is in full sun. In winter the north sees the island’s modest rain; in summer it is a pleasantly cool escape from the southern heat.

Teide and the high mountain roads (TF-21, TF-24, TF-38) are a different world: roughly 1°C cooler for every 150 metres you climb. At the 2,000– 2,356 m the road reaches, expect 12–15°C less than the coast — alpine cold in winter, perfect crisp air in summer. A January day can be 23°C on the beach and 6°C at the cable car, occasionally with snow banked beside the tarmac.

For a rider this stack is the whole point: whatever the day is doing, some part of Tenerife is having perfect riding weather, and it is rarely more than an hour away.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and, at the summit of Mount Teide, the highest point in all of Spain — 3,715 metres above the Atlantic. The road over its shoulder tops out around 2,356 metres, which is why you can leave a 24-degree beach and be riding in crisp 10-degree mountain air within the hour. The greener north-east catches the trade-wind clouds; the desert-like south stays consistently hot and dry.

ZIMA (grudzień, styczeń, luty)

On the coast of Tenerife, the maximum temperatures are around 21 ° C, in December to around 22 ° C. Minimum temperatures drop to 15 ° C. In winter, however, the temperature can also drop to 13 ° C. In some cases the temperature may fall even lower, but in the last 12 years the minimum night temperature has not fallen below 10 ° C.

Wind and drought. That is how we could characterize the summer of Tenerife. The average airspeed is twice as high as in the winter. The windiest month is July when the average speed is around 41 km/h. At the same time, this period is very dry. In June, there could be one day with rain but in July there is practically no rainfall. Temporarily increased cloud cover may be at the top of the mountains.

In July and August, four tropical days per month occur on average. The summer days are much more frequent, especially in July and August, and of course, they are a tropical night. The highest peak temperature occurred in the last 12 years on August 12, 2010, when 39 ° C was measured. The North Part and city of Santa Cruz could be more cloudy. Local people famously call this period “Panzo de Burro” – The belly of Donkey.

Jesień (wrzesień, październik, listopad)

Najlepsza pora roku to jesień, kiedy na wyspie panuje klimat tropikalny. Zwłaszcza we wrześniu i październiku noce są wciąż bardzo ciepłe dzięki ciepłemu oceanowi, który ogrzewa wyspę mimo krótszych dni i mniejszej liczby godzin słonecznych. W październiku woda osiąga najwyższą temperaturę i może sięgać nawet 23°C. Jednocześnie rośnie wilgotność powietrza i przybywa deszczowych dni.

grudzień 23°C 21°C 8°C 21°C Superb — t-shirt coast, alpine summit, Christmas on two wheels

Rain, for the record, barely features: the south averages 0–4 rain days a month, almost all of them between November and February, and showers usually pass within the hour. The north roughly doubles that — still a fraction of a northern European summer.

Rzeczywiste Wyniki Prognozy

Calima: the desert wind worth planning around

A few times a year, an easterly airflow carries fine Saharan dust across the Canaries — the locals call it calima. The sky turns hazy, temperatures can jump 5–10°C in a day, and visibility drops from crystal to milky. Episodes typically last two or three days and are most common in winter and late summer.

On a motorcycle, calima is a nuisance rather than a danger if you treat it right: visibility is reduced but rarely fog-level, the air is hot and dry, and a fine layer of grit settles on the tarmac — so brake earlier, corner with more margin, keep your visor closed and drink more water than usual. If a strong episode lands on your Teide day, swap it for a coastal ride and do the volcano when the air clears; the summit views are worth the wait. We watch the forecast daily and will happily re-plan your route at handover.

Wind, the cloud sea and how to time your ride

The northeast trade winds are Tenerife’s air conditioning. They keep the coast comfortable all summer — and they park a layer of cloud against the north slopes between roughly 600 and 1,500 metres. Riders call the result the mar de nubes, the sea of clouds: climb the TF-24 or TF-21 from the north and you punch through a few hundred metres of mist into brilliant sunshine, with a white ocean of cloud stretching below you. It is one of the great motorcycle moments in Europe, and it is completely routine here.

Timing rules of thumb: ride the north and Anaga in the morning before the cloud thickens, take the mountain around midday when the summit is warmest, and finish on the west or south coast for the evening light. Exposed ridge sections — the TF-24 along La Esperanza, the approaches above the cloud line — can be gusty; nothing dramatic, but keep a relaxed grip and expect a nudge when you cross a ridge gap. Coastal wind is strongest in the afternoons in summer, calmest early.

„W głównych kurortach turystycznych jest więc2800 godzin słonecznych w roku, co oznacza, że Wyspy Kanaryjskie mają najwięcej godzin słonecznych w całej Europie. To zjawisko długich, słonecznych dni wynika z położenia geograficznego wysp oraz z korzystnego wpływu pasatów i antycyklonu azorskiego.

So when is the best time to ride Tenerife?

Honestly: there is no wrong month — that is the island’s superpower. If we had to rank them, November to May is the sweet spot for full riding gear (20–26°C, crisp mountain air, empty roads while the rest of Europe waits for spring), October and September are gloriously warm with a swimmable sea, and high summer works beautifully if you start early and spend midday at altitude where it is 20°C instead of 30°C. Whatever month you land, the fleet is ready year-round — helmet and gloves included — and we deliver across the island, both airports included.
