The character of the road is defined by its dramatic elevation changes and narrow ravines cutting through the oldest part of the Canary Islands, which rose from the ocean over 20 million years ago. Navigating jaw-dropping desert canyons, you’ll pass the Mirador de Las Peñitas—a rare surface water oasis—before descending into Betancuria, strategically built in a hidden interior valley in 1404 to protect early settlers from pirate attacks.
